The sco rats executive committee participates in the side event at the 75th anniversary session of the united nations general assembly

On September 25, 2020, a delegation of the SCO RATS Executive Committee headed by Director Mr. Jumakhon Giyosov including Deputy Director Mr. Vadim Barchuk and Deputy Director Mr. Liu Jie took part in the online side event at the 75th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly entitled “Central Asian Experience with Individuals Returned from Syria and Iraq: Successes, Challenges, and Lessons Learned”.

The opening statements were made by the UN Under-Secretary-General, Head of the UN Office for Counter-Terrorism Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Central Asia, Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Ms. Natalya Gherman.

The animated short film "Returning Home, Rebuilding Life" was presented at the event.

In the panel discussion, representatives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan shared reports on persecution, repatriation, rehabilitation and reintegration of repatriates in Central Asia.

In their statements the Regional Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime for Central Asia Ms. Ashita Mittal, and the Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Central Asia Mr. Ryszard Komenda shared their experience, best practices and results of humanitarian operations, as well as their opinion on the protection of human rights and victims of terrorism.

Mr. Aaron Greenberg, UNICEF Regional Adviser for Europe and Central Asia, reported on the development of UNICEF programme approach in working with repatriated children.

Deputy Head of the UN Office for Counter-Terrorism Mr. Raffi Gregorian touched upon the development of forms and methods of cooperation by means of developing frameworks (programs) of joint UN actions to support the governments of the Member States in working with individuals returned from Syria and Iraq.
