Online radicalisation: who is behind the screen?
In recent years, we have observed Internet going beyond being just a tool for communication and information; it has become a platform for spreading of extremist narratives and radical views.
This dangerous trend, unfortunately, primarily affects young people looking for their place in the world and working on self-identity, who can be influenced by various ideologies.
Ekaterina Belashova, a member of the Republican Information and Outreach Group, will help us understand the causes of this process, its consequences and possible solutions.
Let us start with the basics and find out what are the main factors contributing to the online radicalization of young people. Ekaterina Petrovna, why are our teenagers being targeted by online recruiters?
- Adolescence is the period when a person is looking for their place in the world, feeling the need to belong to a group and seeking recognition. Recruiters perfectly understand these aspects and use them to create the illusion of support and importance. They offer friendship, shared values and a false sense of mission. The Internet gives recruiters the opportunity to work anonymously and without borders, which makes teenagers particularly vulnerable.
What are the main techniques recruiters use to gain trust?
- One popular technique is creating fake profiles. Recruiters pretend to be peers, interested in the same hobbies and problems as the target. They often use compliments and psychological manipulation: for example, emphasizing the uniqueness of the teenager or offering “hidden” knowledge. They may also gradually build negative family or social perceptions to isolate the target from support.
How can parents recognize that their child is being influenced by radicals?
- There are several warning signs: changes in behavior, sudden withdrawal, loss of interest in old hobbies and socializing with friends. The teenager may begin to avoid discussing their new views or hobbies, use unfamiliar terms and phrases. It's also worth noticing a change in attitudes toward religion or social justice - if they become bigoted or radicalized.
What steps should you take if you suspect a teen is being recruited?
- The most important thing is to maintain trust with the child. You should not criticize or threaten, as this will only lead to more alienation. It is important to talk calmly, to find out with whom and what they communicate. If there is evidence of recruitment, it is necessary to seek help from specialists: the Center, law enforcement agencies. It is also advisable to consult a psychologist.
What can society do to protect young people from Internet recruitment?
- Education is a key tool. We must teach children to be critical of information on the Internet, to understand how manipulation and propaganda work. It is also important that parents and teachers are aware of modern threats. Only through joint efforts can we create a safe environment.
