At least three people, two police officers and a civilian, were killed in a terrorist attack on a police outpost in Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to The News International, the attack targeted a security checkpoint on the highway connecting Pakistan with Afghanistan. The terrorists managed to escape from the scene of the attack. A heightened terrorist alert has been declared in the region.
According to Pakistan's Centre for Security Studies and Research, at least 380 security personnel and civilians were killed and 220 were injured in 240 terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations in the Islamic Republic in May and June. Almost 92% of all victims of terrorist attacks were killed in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan bordering Afghanistan.
On June 22, the Central Committee for the Implementation of the National Anti-Terrorism Action Plan approved the Azm-e-Istehkam (“Determination and Stability”) strategy for ensuring national security, which envisages expanding the fight against terrorism both within the country and against the terrorism threat emanating from Afghanistan.
