Official sources have confirmed that two policemen were killed and six others were injured in a terrorist attack on a checkpoint in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province early Thursday morning, Kazakhstan's ctc-rk.kz reported, citing China's Xinhua news agency.

The incident took place in Karak district of the province, where assailants armed with heavy weapons opened fire on police, Karak police sources told Xinhua. The sudden and intense attack reportedly caught security forces by surprise, leading to casualties.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
