Indian security forces eliminate seven Maoist militants during clashes

At least seven Maoist militants have been eliminated in a shootout with security forces in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, the clash with extremists took place in a forested area in Narayanpur district.

Several firearms were also seized during the operation. Indian law enforcement officers continue sweeping the area in search of terrorists, the media indicates.

Maoists, more commonly referred to as Naxalites in India, have been active in the country since the 1960s. They promote their own version of Maoism and Marxism-Leninism and are currently active in 14 of India's 28 states. The Naxalites say they intend to liberate the poor peasantry from “capitalist oppression” and often enjoy the support of the local population. Extremists hide in the jungle and attack villages, officials and police. New Delhi considers the Maoists one of the main internal threats.
