ISKP begins broadcasting news in Pashto using AI

Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) released its first propaganda bulletin using artificial intelligence after the attack that killed four people, including three Spanish tourists, on May 17, 2024 in Bamyan, Afghanistan.

The 52-second video, created using artificial intelligence, shows a male news anchor whose appearance bears a striking resemblance to local residents of Bamyan province. The video is in Pashto, providing a translation of a statement made by Islamic State's mainstream media outlets Amaq and Nashir News in Arabic. In a text translation released by IS's semi-official propaganda arm Al-Azam MEDIA in Khorasan, the AI-generated news anchor said the video appeared the day after the Bamiyan attack. The anchor's audio is fully lip-synced using text-to-speech and text-to-video tools.
