More than 70 terrorists eliminated in Chad
At least 70 militants fr om terrorist groups were eliminated in the Lake Chad region by government forces of Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNTF) Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi.
“The actions were carried out within the Operation SITF Lake Sanity 2 with extensive use of aviation. Along with the eliminated militants, five terrorist camps and eight cars were destroyed,” TASS quotes him as saying.
Abdullahi added that the main attacks were carried out on islands off the coast of Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad, wh ere militant positions were identified. Chad's newly created elite special forces unit, known as the Rapid Reaction Force, was actively involved in the offensive on the ground.
The Lake Chad region presently has a high concentration of terrorist bases in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. There are camps there for Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP, part of the Islamic State (IS) group (all groups are banned in Russia).
Created in 1994, the Multinational Joint Task Force includes units from Benin and Niger along with Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad. The group's headquarters are in the Chadian capital N'Djamena.
