Oslo shooter sentenced to 30 years in prison

On Thursday, July 4, the Oslo District Court issued a verdict in the case of a shooting outside a nightclub in the Norwegian capital in 2022. According to a court decision cited by AP, the defendant, a Norwegian citizen of Iranian origin, Zaniar Matapur, was found guilty of terrorism and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The court ruled that the 45-year-old man fired 18 shots into the crowd - 10 from an assault rifle and eight from a handgun. The attack killed two people and injured 21 others. According to the prosecutor's office, Matapur swore allegiance to Islamic State terrorist organization.

During the trial, both the prosecution and defense agreed that Matapur was shooting at the crowd and that he was motivated by terrorism ideas. However, the defendant's lawyer sought an acquittal, arguing that his client was provoked into the attack by a Danish intelligence agent who posed as a high-ranking member of the Islamic State.
