German police successfully prevented a terrorist attack before the final match of the 2024 European Football Championship. Media reports that a terrorist attack was to be held in the fan zone of the England national team on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin.

Police thwarted a suspected terrorist attack ahead of the European Football Championship final by raiding several addresses just hours before kick-off, The Sun reports. It is noted that the detainees turned out to be supporters of ISIS (a terrorist organization banned in Russia), who were already under surveillance by the German police.

Police searched three addresses looking for five men who were photographed at Breitscheidplatz square, where they allegedly plotted the attack. “The homes of three men at three addresses in Potsdam were searched. Special forces were involved in the operation. The measures were taken due to an immediate threat from the Islamist movement,” Berlin police officials said.

Before the start of Euro 2024, the German border service began checking the documents of those entering from other countries in the Schengen area. German authorities explained the introduction of checks with the need to prevent the penetration of potential attackers. German authorities also warned that during the European Football Championship the country could face a terrorist attack similar to the one that occurred in March at the Crocus City Hall near Moscow.
