Terrorist suspect arrested in Cyprus at Russia's request
A terrorist suspect was arrested in Cyprus at the request of Russia, and his extradition trial will take place in September, the Phileleftheros newspaper reported.
“On Tuesday, an application for the extradition of a 35-year-old Russian passport holder originally from Chechnya was registered in the Nicosia District Court. He was arrested by Cyprus police on Monday on the basis of an arrest warrant and notice issued by the Russian Federation,” the newspaper writes. According to them, the start of hearings in the Nicosia District Court is scheduled for September 2, and until then the suspect will be in custody.
The newspaper writes that the suspect was in the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and was handed over to the Cypriot police by UN mission officers at a checkpoint in the buffer zone.
According to a Phileleftheros source, the 35-year-old man is suspected of participating in armed groups’ activities and violating the Russian Criminal Code. The newspaper's sources report that he participated in an extremist Islamic organization that is internationally designated as terrorist and is conducting armed operations in the Middle East.
