Iraq and US continue dialogue on coalition troops withdrawal

The withdrawal of the international coalition troops from Iraq was supposed to begin in September 2025, as the media reported earlier. However, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry later clarified that the date of the announcement of the final withdrawal of the remaining US troops from the country had been postponed due to the recent events in the region. At the same time, the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, citing sources, added that Washington had allegedly suspended the process of negotiations on the troop withdrawal.

Nevertheless, the dialogue on the withdrawal of the US-led international coalition from Iraq continues, Izvestia was told at the Russian diplomatic mission in Baghdad.

— On August 15, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry indeed indicated the postponement of the announcement of the completion date of the international anti-ISIS coalition mission (ISIS, IS, “Islamic State” - a terrorist organization). However, according to Iraqi diplomats, there is no talk of suspending negotiations on this issue. The overwhelming majority of Iraqi society is unanimous in the fact that the coalition must complete its mandate and leave the country, the Russian embassy noted.

At the same time, instead of the activities of the international coalition in Iraq, the parties plan to begin a bilateral cooperation format.

- Negotiations on the withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq within the framework of the bilateral Supreme Military Commission have been underway since January 2024. At the same time, Baghdad plans to further develop cooperation in the field of security with Washington, but on a bilateral basis. The formats and modes of such cooperation are being discussed, the Russian diplomatic mission noted.
