Iraqi Prime Minister: "Country no longer needs US military presence"
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani told Bloomberg that the country no longer needs the presence of American troops and US-led international coalition forces, and a schedule for their withdrawal will be announced soon.
“There is no need for coalition forces. We have moved from wars to stability. The Islamic State no longer really poses a serious threat,” the prime minister said.
According to him, the experience of successful joint American-Iraqi raids against the remnants of ISIS formations on the country's territory confirms that Iraqi security forces are capable of fighting them on their own.
He recalled that he had already discussed the issue of withdrawing US troops from Iraq with President Joe Biden at a meeting held in April and reported “reaching a mutual understanding on this issue.”
At the same time, the prime minister expressed confidence that US-Iraqi cooperation in the field of security will continue after the withdrawal of troops.
According to Bloomberg, there are about 2.5 thousand US troops in Iraq.
