US names condition for removing Taliban from terrorist list
The removal of the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations by the United States is impossible without significant changes in the movement’s attitude towards human rights. This was stated by the head of the State Department press service Matthew Miller at a regular briefing for journalists.
He was asked to comment on the Russian Federation's decision to remove the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations. “We have not changed our designation of the Taliban as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization, and we continue to make clear that any significant steps towards normalization of relations is contingent upon a profound shift in the Taliban’s human rights conduct,” Miller said, as quoted by TASS. According to him, "there has been remarkable unity among the international community on that question."
The Special Representative of the Russian president for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov stated on October 4 that the fundamental decision to remove the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations had been made at the highest level, but the necessary legal procedures still needed to be followed.
