CHINA OPPOSES POLITICIZATION, INSTRUMENTALIZATION OF COUNTERTERRORISM ISSUES

China opposes the politicization and instrumentalization of counterterrorism, double standards and selective counterterrorism. This was stated by the Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the UN Zhang Jun, speaking at an open meeting of the UN Security Council on the topic “Terrorist attacks threaten international peace and security.”

According to him, at present, terrorist activities have intensified in the world, with such terrorist organizations as the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement being rampant. China deeply regrets that in recent years there has been a regression in the positions of individual countries on countering terrorism. Countries that politicize and instrumentalize the problem of combating terrorism, accepting double standards or countering terrorism selectively, can ultimately harm both themselves and others, as well as the overall situation of international cooperation in the field of countering terrorism. In the face of the common threat of terrorism, all parties must completely abandon geopolitical calculations and ideological prejudices, support the UN in its key coordinating role, and complete negotiations on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism as soon as possible.

Efforts must be made to address the root causes of terrorism. It is difficult to eradicate terrorism by relying on military methods alone. It is necessary to use comprehensive political, economic, judicial and other methods to combat it systematically.
