Two suspects in plot to attack Israelis arrested in Sri Lanka
Two citizens have been detained in Sri Lanka on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack against Israelis on the island, The Times of Israel reported on Thursday.
According to the Counter-Terrorism Unit in Sri Lanka, one of the detainees had lived in Iraq for some time. It is noted that intelligence about the involvement of these people in plotting the terrorist attack came from Indian security services.
The day before, the Israeli National Security Council called on Israelis to leave Sri Lankan resorts amid the threat of a terrorist attack. In addition, Israeli citizens were warned against advertising their nationality and against mass gatherings.
The warnings came after calls to boycott Israeli businesses in southeastern Sri Lanka were published on social media.
The US Embassy in Sri Lanka also stated that it had received reliable information about an attack being planned against Israelis.
