SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming shares the organization's position on Afghanistan
The SCO expects Afghanistan to create an inclusive and tolerant cabinet with the participation of representatives of all political, ethnic and religious groups. This was reported to Izvestia by SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming.
“The Afghan issue is also very important, especially from the point of view of ensuring peace, stability and security in the region. We would like Afghanistan to become a country free of terrorism, war and drugs. And we hope that in future a government will be formed in Afghanistan with the broad participation of representatives of all political, ethnic and religious groups, an open and tolerant government. This will benefit Afghanistan, the SCO space and the entire international community,” the Secretary General stressed.
Afghanistan received the status of an observer state in the SCO in 2012. However, at the moment, this status is only de jure, since the Taliban organization, whose representatives occupy leadership positions in Afghanistan, is under SCO sanctions for terrorist activities.
