The National Security Committee, in coordination with the Almaty Region Prosecutor's Office and with the participation of the police, detained five citizens of Kazakhstan on suspicion of arranging religious extremist activities in the city of Almaty and in Almaty and Ulytau provinces.

In addition, a preventive measure in the form of a "written undertaking not to leave" was applied to 17 individuals due to their participation in the activities of a banned organization.

Religious literature and other material evidence were seized during searches at the places of residence of the defendants.

Of these individuals, four had previously been convicted of committing extremist crimes, and nine had been given official warnings about the liability connected to participation in the activities of a banned organization.

A pre-trial investigation is being conducted under Parts 1 and 2 of Article 405 of the Criminal Code.
