UN says lifting terrorist status from Syrian opposition is a possibility

Countries hoping for a peaceful change of power in Syria will have to consider the possibility of excluding a number of armed opposition groups that have seized power in Damascus from the list of terrorist organizations. This opinion, according to TASS, was expressed by the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in an interview with the Financial Times (FT).

"New realities have emerged on the ground. Of course, many armed groups are involved, and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, banned in Russia) is obviously one of them. We cannot rule out working with them," the UN envoy noted. Earlier, Pedersen reported on the possibility of excluding HTS from the list of terrorist organizations in accordance with the established procedure.

According to him, the possible exclusion of some armed opposition groups from the list of banned organizations will depend on their actions on the ground, as well as on whether they are ready to be "inclusive" in the new government.

Earlier, the US and UK announced that they would consider revising the status of the Syrian Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which is on the list of banned organizations.
