UN Security Council split over interaction with "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan"
The UN Security Council will hold a special meeting to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and extend the mandate of the committee for monitoring sanctions imposed on the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" (the Taliban's self-designation of the country), Ariana News reports.
The meeting will be addressed by the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan and the head of UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan) Roza Otunbayeva.
Commenting on this fact, IEA representative Zabihullah Mujahid emphasized that the failure to transfer Afghanistan's seat in the UN to a representative of the ruling government of Afghanistan has led to many biased decisions made by the organization.
"We want Afghans to have a voice before anyone discusses Afghanistan. A representative of the current government should be there, defend the position and provide clarifications on ambiguities. Then, if the decision is made transparently, it will be fair," Mujahid said.
The UN Security Council meeting is taking place against the backdrop of a clear split between Western countries and countries in the region over the issue of interaction with the Islamic Emirate, Ariana News notes.
