Kurdish general warns of ISIS attacks in Syria on New Year's Eve

The Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group has recently gained more weapons and armaments, taken up positions in the Syrian desert and enjoyed freedom of movement, the head of the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Mazloum Abdi told The Times.

"They have become a threat in the desert. We received intelligence that they want to attack other Syrian cities during the New Year celebrations. We have shared this information with the relevant parties," Abdi said, warning of increased terrorist activity and a "security vacuum."

According to the general, pro-Turkish rebel groups are not abiding by the terms of the ceasefire brokered by the United States last week: "We are responding to attacks against us and strengthening our defensive lines." Abdi promised that the SDF would cease to exist and join a new Syrian army led by the country's new authorities in Damascus if the rights of the Kurds and other minorities are guaranteed.

The US government warned in December 2024 that ISIS was “waiting in.” There are 20,000 ISIS fighters and leaders in Iraqi prisons and 10,000 in Syria. In addition, there are 25,000 children in the Al-Hol camp, where family members of foreign ISIS fighters were taken, who could become “the potential next generation of ISIS,” according to a US Central Command report.
