US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas stated that the US was facing a significant increase in violent extremism and the ongoing threat of terrorism within the country, RIA Novosti reports.

Alejandro Mayorkas noted that not only the US had a "constant threat of foreign terrorism, which is why the Department of Homeland Security was created, but also hostile nation states." According to him, the US has seen a significant increase in "homegrown violent extremism" over the past ten years.

According to Mayorkas, America today has a "very complex threat landscape," which requires the authorities, along with the population, to be on guard and take precautions to avoid violence.
