Turkiye puts army on alert for possible operation in Syria

The Turkish Armed Forces have been put on high alert due to a possible operation in Syria against militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Tengrinews.kz reports with reference to a Türkiye newspaper.

"While demanding that the new Syrian leadership take the necessary measures against the terrorist organization, Ankara continues to prepare for any scenario. Troops on the border have been put on alert for a possible operation," the report says.

It is noted that Ankara is actively working to eliminate the PKK terrorist organization both in Syria and Iraq. After the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime, Turkey stated that it was ready to support Syria in various areas, from restoring infrastructure to healthcare. At the same time, steps are being taken to eliminate militants.

Turkey also held several meetings with the leader of the Syrian transitional government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and expressed its demands:

- terrorists who are not citizens of Syria, including those from Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Europe, must leave the country;

- all PKK leaders, including Syrians, must leave Syria, too. Syrian members of the group are required to lay down their arms, and their future will be decided by the Syrian government.

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with Hürriyet that Ankara has issued an ultimatum to PKK militants in Syria, and if the calls are ignored, a military operation may become relevant.

"We would like to resolve everything peacefully, but if this does not work out, there will be a military operation," he said.
