Iraqi FM says ISIS threat aggravates after Assad's fall
The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has strengthened its positions after the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Mohammed Hussein said in Davos. This was reported by Al-Arabiya.
"IS has become larger. It has recently attracted new members and gained control over a larger volume of weapons due to the collapse of the Syrian army," the minister said.
He reminded that IS cells still remain in Iraq, and the country has retained a base for disseminating IS narratives.
Hussein noted that the only way to contain IS and stabilize the situation in Syria was to conduct a comprehensive national dialogue in accordance with the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 of 2015.
Last week, Marco Rubio, now the US Secretary of State, noted that ISIS remained a threat and Washington would keep a contingent of 900 troops in north-east Syria and will maintain a partnership with the Kurdish militia.
