Turkish Foreign Minister calls on Baghdad to jointly confront ISIS and Kurdish forces

During his visit to Baghdad, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called on Iraqi authorities to work together to combat Kurdish armed groups and the ISIS terrorist group.

"I want to point out in the strongest possible terms the following fact: the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is attacking Turkey, Iraq and Syria. For the sake of the future of the region and the prosperity of our peoples, we must fight terrorism together. We must bring all our forces to bear and destroy the PKK and ISIS," Sabah quotes him as saying at a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Mohammed Hussein.

According to him, Ankara still expects Baghdad, which added the PKK to the list of banned organizations in 2024, to designate it as a terrorist organization. He noted that the parties also discussed possible cooperation, including in the intelligence sphere, and the involvement of other countries in the elimination of ISIS.

According to Sabah, Hussein said that Turkey and Iraq had aligned their positions on the situation in Syria. He said that Baghdad was in contact with the new Syrian administration. The minister added that they had also spoken with Fidan about border security and combating ISIS.
