Syrian Kurds reject deal with Julani government

The new "government" of Syria presented a draft peace agreement to the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in order to resolve the crisis in the northeast of the country. According to Al-Arabiya sources, the proposal includes recognition of the cultural rights of the Kurds and their inclusion in the future national constitution, as well as providing Kurdish militias with the opportunity to join the ranks of the new armed forces.

The publication's sources confirmed that the "government" of Mohammed Julani agreed to the introduction of a decentralized system of governance in the country, which gives local governments broad powers to manage local affairs.

However, the media notes that the Kurds rejected the offer and put forward their own conditions.

The SDF units will be ready to join the Syrian army only as whole army units, retaining their commanders and weapons. The SDF command also demands that Damascus not send troops to areas inhabited by the Kurdish community. The Kurds also intend to receive a share of the sale of Syrian oil. The Iraqi Kurdistan government is mediating the talks.

SDF commander Mazlum Abdi asked the leader of the Iraqi autonomy, Nechirvan Barzani, to use his capabilities and connections with the Turkish government to end the hostilities. First of all, the Kurds demand that Damascus and its Turkish allies stop fighting in the area of the Tishreen Dam in Raqqa province. A ceasefire could later serve as the basis for long-term peace.
