The leader of the "new authorities" of Syria Ahmed al-Sharaa will serve as the country's president during the transitional period. This was said in a statement by the "military operations directorate" (the governing body of the "new authorities"), published on their Telegram channel.

"We announce the assumption of office by Ahmed al-Sharaa as the country's president during the transitional period. He will serve as the head of the Syrian Arab Republic and represent it at international forums," the statement reads.

The statement was read by the spokesman for the "military operations directorate" Hassan Abdel Ghani during a meeting of representatives of the "new Syrian authorities" led by Ahmed al-Sharaa with the leaders of armed groups operating in the country.
