Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that drug production and trafficking in Afghanistan have been reduced to zero. His words are quoted by Tolo news.

"We are preventing all types of drug smuggling. And drug production in Afghanistan has been eliminated. Drug cultivation and trafficking have been practically reduced to zero level," Mujahid emphasized. According to him, this means that the national issue of drug smuggling, "if it existed in the past," is now "naturally coming to an end."

On January 2, 2025, Afghan Counter Narcotics Department spokesman Abdul Rahman Qasemi said that at least 10% of the country's population are drug addicts. Qasemi mentioned that the country has a treatment program for drug addicts, producing encouraging results - out of 100 thousand people who sought help over the past year, about 95% were able to overcome the addiction.
