The US Africa Command carried out an airstrike on a suspected location of militants of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in Somalia. The operation was coordinated with the government of the East African state, US Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth explained, DW reports.

As a result of the airstrikes, numerous militants were killed, and no civilians were harmed, according to the Pentagon's initial assessment. This operation significantly "undermines IS's ability to plan and carry out terrorist attacks that threaten the United States, our partners, and innocent civilians," Hegseth emphasized.

The terrorists who were hit were hiding in caves, US President Donald Trump said. According to him, they included a high-ranking representative of the group responsible for orchestrating its operations.
