German authorities unable to deport terrorist who planned to blow up Bundestag
A native of Syria, terrorist Shaasa al-M., who served time in Germany for preparing a terrorist attack near the Bundestag building, keeps living in Germany despite attempts by municipal authorities to have him deported, the tabloid Bild reports.
As reported by EADaily, since March 2021, Shaasa al-M. has been living in a refugee reception center on the banks of the Oder River. The Syrian native moved into the hostel after serving a five-year sentence in a German prison. In 2017, this ISIS militant, who did not renounce the terrorist organization even after being taken into custody, was sentenced to imprisonment for plotting a terrorist attack.
The young man arrived in Germany in 2015 and started surveying the central squares of Berlin: the Reichstag, Alexanderplatz, and Brandenburg Gate. He sent photographs, precise descriptions, and numbers of visitors to Syria. His goal was to attack tourist buses near the German Parliament. However, the police prevented the attack and detained the Syrian native in the spring of 2016. Shaas al-M.'s biography, however, does not provide sufficient grounds for his deportation after his release.
"Shaas al-M. is considered a threat, but we cannot deport him to Syria. He has filed an appeal against the deprivation of his refugee status," said Gernot Schmidt, the head of the district where the former criminal lives.
As the member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) emphasized, the only limitation is that Shaas al-M. is prohibited from leaving his place of residence and must report to the police every week.
"That's all we can do. And he intends to appeal this decision, too," said Schmidt.
