The current situation in Syria

The transition period in Syria may last from three to five years, and most of the powers will belong to the president of the country. This is stated in the draft constitutional declaration, the main points of which were cited by the Al Jazeera TV channel.

According to its sources, it is assumed that Syria, according to the draft constitutional declaration, will be a presidential republic. The declaration envisages that the national legislation will be based on the principles of Islamic law. It is also indicated that the main task of the national army will be "protecting the homeland and Syrian citizens and maintaining civil peace in the country." Ownership of weapons will be limited to representatives of government agencies.

As the TV channel indicates, the draft constitutional declaration is based on previous editions of the country's constitution, "especially on the principles of the basic law from 1950."

The day before, the constitutional committee established by the transitional "government" of Syria completed drafting the constitutional declaration. According to Al Jazeera, this document was to be presented to the "head of the new" Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, on March 12.

Meanwhile, the adviser to the Israeli Prime Minister's office Dmitry Gendelman issued a statement that "Israel will not allow the presence of terrorist organisations and armed groups that pose a threat to its citizens in the security zone in southern Syria. Any attempt by the regime forces or terrorist organizations to strengthen their positions in this area will be prevented. Israel is ready, if necessary, to protect the Druze population in Syria from the actions of the new regime and will not allow attacks on the Druze. Anyone who tries to do this will face our harsh response."
