Afghanistan ranks ninth in Global Terrorism Index
Afghanistan is not among the top five countries most affected by terrorism for the second year in a row, this year ranking ninth. The data was released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) as part of the 12th Global Terrorism Index.
"For two years in a row, Afghanistan has not been among the top five countries most affected by terrorism, the largest improvement since the index was launched," the report said.
Burkina Faso and Pakistan rank first and second, respectively. The report stresses that terrorism in Afghanistan has "significantly decreased" since the Taliban came to power, and that the new rulers have maintained "internal stability."
According to the spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Taliban's self-designation for the country) Zabihullah Mujahid, Afghan soil "does not pose a threat to any country."
"The current security is a great achievement for Afghans. However, isolated incidents still happen and they affect all countries - every country has these problems," Mujahid said.
The report identified IS as the most dangerous terrorist group in Afghanistan, responsible for a fifth of all terrorist attacks in 2024. It also noted the deterioration of relations between the Islamic Emirate and Pakistan due to tensions around the Durand Line and Pakistani airstrikes on Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts in Afghanistan.
