Türkiye to hand over high-precision and technological weapons to Syria
Turkey is preparing to start supplying advanced offensive and defensive weapons to the Syrian army and plans to appoint a senior officer as a military adviser to the Syrian Defense Ministry, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported, citing government sources.
The arsenal that Ankara intends to transfer to Damascus as part of agreements on joint defense and “brotherly relations” will include combat aircraft, air defense systems and armored vehicles. The move is intended to strengthen Syria’s military potential after decades of instability.
Last week, key figures from the Turkish leadership met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus. The talks involved Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yasar Guler and the head of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Ibrahim Kalin. The visit was part of Turkey’s efforts to support the new Syrian leadership.
Fidan said that Ankara intends to become a guarantor of stability in Syria, despite attempts by external forces to destabilize the region. "We have warned about provocations and will stop them with administrative and political measures," he stressed, calling the task of maintaining order in Syria difficult, but feasible with Turkey's support.
The information about the expansion of military cooperation is confirmed by the data from other sources. According to Reuters, Turkey has already sent a military delegation to Syria to discuss the modernization of the army and the restoration of the defense sector. In the coming days, additional specialists are expected to arrive to train the Syrian military.
According to Middle East Eye, Ankara and Damascus are negotiating a joint defense strategy, including the possible deployment of Turkish air bases in central Syria. This became possible after the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime, which Turkey actively opposed by supporting rebels, including the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group.
