SCNS of Kyrgyzstan reports on prevention of a coup d'état

An attempt to organise mass riots and incitement of interethnic conflict was thwarted, 24.kg reported with reference to the press centre of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The SCNS noted that the attempts of preparation to incite interethnic discord by orchestrating local conflicts with subsequent mass protests and riots were revealed and suppressed. The main goal was to destabilise the social and political situation with a subsequent coup attempt.

‘At the beginning of 2025, in the course of the investigation of a criminal case, with the authorisation of the judicial authorities, a set of operational and investigative activities was carried out to look into a group of persons who were planning mass riots, under the control of ideological inspirers, one of whom is on the run, presumably in the UAE. All members of the group, including middle-level leaders, have been identified and detained,’ the statement reads.

The special services added that the group planned to make a fake provocative video showing a Kyrgyz girl beaten, half-naked and allegedly abused by foreigners. In the video, she  would be pleading for help and asking to protect her against the foreigners by sharing the video on social media as widely as possible.

‘The video was meant to ignite national patriotic sentiments and trigger the unorganised youth of the country similar to the events that took place in May 2024. Then specially trained militant groups equipped with firearms would organise fights and pogroms in places of work and residence of foreigners in different points of Bishkek,’ the SCNS said.

In addition, similar provocations were planned against local residents and representatives of law enforcement agencies, to be followed by mass riots. All these actions were meant to discredit the country's governing bodies and cause discontent among the population, creating favourable conditions for large-scale protests financed by the so-called opposition.

The investigation also obtained information that the overall plotting activity was carried out remotely from outside Kyrgyzstan. Work is currently underway to detain the organizers. Thus, the State Committee, as a result of the measures carried out, thwarted an attempt to organise mass riots at the final stage of preparation and implementation of the above plans.
