Turkish police detain 20 people suspected of links to IS
On Tuesday, Turkish police detained 20 suspects with links to the ‘Islamic State’ (IS) in an ongoing operation, Istanbul's chief prosecutor's office claimed.
According to Xinhua, it was reported that the operation was launched after receiving information that 32 suspects might carry out attacks against Turkiye.
During searches at the suspects' addresses, police seized an unlicensed gun, ammunition, a large amount of cash in both foreign and local currencies and various digital materials, the prosecutor's office said.
Twenty suspects were taken to the police station for further investigation.
Police are still working to apprehend the remaining 12 suspects who have been identified as ‘foreign terrorists,’ the statement said.
The nationalities of the suspects were not disclosed.
Turkiye listed IS as a terrorist organisation in 2013 and had been repeatedly attacked by the group in recent years. Turkish security forces have stepped up counter-terrorism operations against suspected members and supporters within and outside the country.
