US puts eight conditions on Syria for partial sanction relief

The Trump administration has handed over to the Syrian authorities a list of eight requirements as a prerequisite for the partial relief of sanctions. This was reported by The Washington Post with reference to sources in the White House.

Open sources mention only some of these as the complete list has not been published.

Among the key conditions is granting the US the right to conduct counterterrorism operations on Syrian land, a complete break from the Palestinian military and political structures, as well as their expulsion, in order to address Israel's concerns.

Besides, Washington expects Damascus to publicly support efforts to fight ISIS and demonstrate explicitly willingness to reform the political system. In addition, the US is counting on the Syrian government to show its ability to unite the country's ethnic and religious minorities.

An American expert on the Middle East Eran Lev said that, in his opinion, the current Syrian leader is only imitating changes, while in fact he is establishing a regime similar to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

He added that the US decision not to be actively present in the region in the past has already resulted in the growing influence of terrorist groups, including the Islamic State – Khorasan Province, which is now considered one of the most dangerous branches of the organisation.
