US to build new military base in Syria

The US military in Syria are getting ready to set up a new major military base in Raqqa province. According to Al-Mayadeen, construction has begun in the vicinity area of strategically important Tishreen Dam on the Euphrates River, which has long been the site of fierce fight between the Kurdish militia and the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants.

According to the publication's sources, the US military has delivered equipment and supplies to bases in the area of the Al-Omar and Conoco oil fields in Deir ez-Zor province, from where they will be moved to the Tishreen area.

It is believed that both bases will eventually be abandoned, after which the US military will move to the area of the city of al-Shaddadi and the Tishreen Dam.

The US military are expected to be involved in ensuring the ceasefire between the Kurdish militia and forces loyal to the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham government in Damascus.

Media sources report that transport helicopters and aircraft carrying equipment and construction materials are actively moving in the airspace near the Al-Omar and Conoco bases.

On Thursday, The New York Times reported that the United States are reducing their military presence in Syria. The Pentagon is expected to withdraw 1,400 of its 2,000 troops and close three of its eight Syrian military bases.

Earlier, the US president has repeatedly promised to reduce presence in Syria as part of the curtailment of the American military in the Middle East. However, since Trump's first presidential term, the number of American troops in Syria has steadily increased
