According to police, three passengers were injured after a U.S. citizen allegedly hijacked a small plane in Belize at knifepoint, reports ABC News.

Police said the hijacker was fatally shot in the chest by a passenger who had a licence to carry a firearm.

Three passengers, all from Belize, suffered stab wounds. A total of 14 passengers, including two Americans, were on board, police said.

The U.S. Embassy has been informed and will assist police in the investigation.
