Russia has officially removed the Taliban movement from the list of terrorist organisations. This decision was taken by the Supreme Court, which satisfied the lawsuit filed by the Prosecutor General's Office to suspend the ban on the movement's activities.

The Taliban had been on Russia's list of terrorist organisations since 2003. It became the first organisation to be removed from the list of terrorist organisations under amendments to the law “On Countering Terrorism,” which came into force in 2023. The changes allow organisations to be removed from the list if they are proven to have ceased propaganda, justification and support for terrorism.

Previously, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan took similar steps in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
