Lithuania to restrict entry of Central Asian migrants for fear of radicalisation

Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas announced his intention to restrict the entry of migrants from Central Asia. The reason for this step was the concerns of local security services about the risks of radicalisation of migrants from the region.

This statement followed information from the Lithuanian State Security Department that about ten citizens of Central Asian countries had recently been prohibited to enter the country. The reason was suspected links to terrorist organisations.

In recent years, Lithuania has recorded an increase in the migration flow from Central Asian countries. The Lithuanian authorities now plan to tighten their approach to admitting citizens of these countries, emphasising that this was not a matter of discrimination but of the need to ensure internal security.
