The United States has informed Israel of plans to start withdrawing the US troops fr om Syria in the next two to three months, the Israeli portal Ynet reported, citing sources. According to them, Israel tried to prevent this step, but it failed to persuade its American colleagues to change their position.

According to Ynet, Israeli intelligence chiefs continue to “put pressure” on their American counterparts to keep US troops in Syria. According to an unnamed Israeli official, Israel fears that the withdrawal of the US contingent would allow Turkey to expand its influence in the SAR.

In February, NBC reported that because of Donald Trump's “interest” in the issue, the Pentagon began developing a plan to withdraw the US military from Syria in 30, 60 and 90 days. The US president, commenting on the article, said he planned to make a decision on this matter.

There are more than 10 US military bases in Syria, hosting about 2 thousand troops. Their task, according to the Pentagon, is to fight “Islamic State.” The withdrawal of the Americans will deprive the Syrian Kurds of support. In addition, such a move will jeopardise prisons and camps wh ere 50,000 people are held, including about 9,000 militants, NBC sources indicated.
