Belarusian customs officers detain a record batch of explosives

The largest batch of explosives in the history of Belarus was detained at the Belarusian-Polish border. The State Customs Committee disclosed this on April 6, reports EADaily.

“A 41-year-old driver tried to smuggle 580 kg of high-power explosives of foreign origin (presumably the U.S.) through the Belarusian-Polish border for further transit to Russia,” reads the statement.

It is noted that the driver tried to enter Belarus through Brest on his Mercedes, but based on the risk profiling the car was selected for scanning using the complex screening equipment.

“The scanner image showed a non-typical darkening in the area of the car floor and in the wall separating the cargo and passenger compartments. The vehicle was sent for an in-depth inspection, followed by partial dismantling of the car floor and wall. As a result, a light grey and light yellow substance was found behind insulation and chipboard sheets. In addition, the inside of the vehicle was treated with technical grease to prevent service dogs from detecting the substance,” the customs said.

Competent specialists were engaged to extract the substance. The customs laboratory promptly tested it and confirmed that the detected substance was “a powerful breezant explosive substance pentaerythritetetranitrate (TEN) weighing more than 580kg.” The detained driver said that an acquaintance from Estonia asked him to bring the car to Russia.
