Jihadists opened fire on a convoy of government troops in the Tillaberi region. Twelve soldiers were killed in the attack. IS resources published photos of the aftermath of the attack as evidence.

Nigerian media reported a different version of events. According to their information, jihadists broke into a camp where employees of Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited Company were staying and kidnapped five engineers, including four Indian citizens and a Nigerian one. Soldiers sent to help were ambushed and killed. Relatives of the kidnapped and their colleagues confirmed the journalists' version.

It is noteworthy that IS propagandists did not mention Indian citizens in their statement about the attack on the Niger military convoy. This is not the first kidnapping of foreigners blamed on IS militants.
