The European Union intends to finance the imprisonment of IS militants in Syria
The European Union intends to finance the imprisonment of Islamic State militants and their families in camps in northern Syria. This was reported by Der Spiegel magazine, citing its own sources.
According to TASS, the European External Action Service warned at a meeting on April 30 that security at the camps is under threat due to the gradual withdrawal of US forces from the region and cuts in financial aid by Washington. The publication notes that many extremists from Europe are located in the large refugee camps of Al-Hawl and Roj.
EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Bart Dujin pointed out at the meeting that it was essential to prevent the collapse of the security system at all costs. It is currently provided by Kurdish forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces. According to Dujin, the flight of militants would pose a serious threat to the security of not only the region but also Europe.
According to Der Spiegel, the cost of securing the camps could reach $150 million per year. As noted in the article, Germany has welcomed the idea of providing financial support for these efforts.
