Azerbaijani citizens linked to international terrorism detained abroad
The State Security Service (SSS) reports the arrest of several key figures involved in the creation of a terrorist cell aiming to plot large-scale attacks in Azerbaijan.
According to the SSS, a group of Azerbaijani citizens planned a series of terrorist attacks, creating underground hideouts in forests in the north of the country and filling them with weapons, ammunition, and explosives. These hideouts served not only as bases for preparing attacks, but also became part of a complex network supporting the activities of the terrorist cell.
The investigation led to the identification of four Azerbaijani citizens who were members of this group. Vugar Najafli, Jamal Gezalov, Tofik Yusifli, and Dadash Gashimov left the country in 2024 and went into hiding in the mountainous regions on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where they were trained by foreign terrorist organizations and took part in combat operations.
They became part of an international network that planned terrorist attacks threatening national security. The criminals were arrested abroad and brought to Azerbaijan.
In addition, it was established that part of the group's terrorist activities were financed by two other Azerbaijani citizens, Mir Javad Huseynli and Tural Agayev. During the investigation, other criminal links were discovered, confirming the involvement of these individuals in international terrorist activities.
All those detained are now in custody and charged with several articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, including financing terrorism, participation in armed conflicts outside the country, as well as inciting religious hatred and spreading extremist narratives.
Investigative and operational measures are currently underway, and the SSU is working to uncover all links in the terrorist network, which, according to the agency, could threaten not just Azerbaijan's internal security but also stability in the region as a whole.
