US Defense Secretary Pete Hagert has ordered the creation of a commission to investigate the circumstances around the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in 2021. This is stated in a document published by the head of the Pentagon on X.

“Over the past three months, the department has been reviewing these catastrophic events in the history of our armed forces. I have concluded that we need to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ensure accountability for these events and provide a complete picture to the American people,” the published memorandum states.

Hagseth recalled that on August 26, 2021, 13 military personnel and 170 civilians were killed in a terrorist attack at Kabul airport. He stressed that the special commission will have to examine reports made in previous investigations and analyze the decision-making process that led to “one of the darkest and deadliest moments” in US history.
