Syrian authorities change approach to relatives of IS fighters: reintegration replaces isolation

Syrian Interior Minister Nour al-Din al-Baba said that Arab-Kurdish forces will soon hand over control of the Al-Hawl camp to the official Damascus government, according to the Telegram channel Directorate 4.

He said that the camp's management system will be totally overhauled. The authorities intend to implement a strategy for the gradual reintegration of IS fighters' families into Syrian society. This primarily concerns Syrian citizens. No specific measures have yet been decided regarding foreigners held in the camp.

Al-Baba noted that a “legal vacuum” had long existed in Al-Hawl, which contributed to the growth of violence and radicalization among the camp's residents. He stressed that collective punishment and repression against relatives of militants only reinforce extremist sentiments and create fertile ground for the emergence of a new generation of jihadists.
