The US State Department has warned of an increased risk of terrorist attacks in Italy.

Italian authorities need to be more cautious and far-sighted in how they approach security issues considering the growing potential threat of terrorism. This was reported by TASS, citing the Euractiv portal.

According to a warning issued by the State Department, particular attention should be paid to places where large numbers of tourists gather, as a terrorist attack could occur  there “without warning.” According to the US scale, the alert level for Italy has been raised from 1 to 2 (out of 4), as well as for France, Germany, and Spain. For the rest of the EU, level 1 remains in effect. The portal reminds us that the US had previously raised the alert level for Italy, which was linked to the influx of tourists.

This year, the number of visitors to Italy, mainly to Rome, has increased due to the Jubilee Year of Christianity celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church, which has led to an influx of pilgrims and people wishing to pass through the Holy Doors of Rome's main churches to be cleansed of their sins.
