Mufti who collaborated with extremists was arrested in the Rostov region of Russia

FSB and police officers detained Ahmed Abusupyanov, suspected of collaborating with the religious group At-Takfir Wal-Hijra, in the Rostov region. This was reported by Kommersant, citing a source in law enforcement. The source also confirmed that it was Abusupyanov who negotiated with the attackers of the Rostov SIZO-1 detention center in June last year.

"Ahmed Abusupyanov is a self-proclaimed mufti of the region and chairman of the Main Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Rostov Region. He collaborated with the banned extremist group At-Takfir Val-Hijra. In September 2023, together with his supporters, he attacked a Muslim he had religious differences with," the source said.

The press service of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Rostov region reported that its officers, together with operatives from the Center for Countering Extremism of the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Rostov region, had stopped the activities of “a Russian citizen involved in the dissemination of radical religious ideas.” According to the statement, the suspect promoted intolerance toward representatives of other faiths, as well as Muslims of other denominations, and provoked conflicts with the official Muslim clergy.
