Thirteen people were killed in an attack by militants on a mosque in northern Nigeria

ASTANA, August 20. At least 13 people were shot dead during an attack by a group of armed men on a mosque during morning prayers in the northern state of Katsina in Nigeria, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing a local official. Nasir Muazu, Katsina state commissioner for internal security and home affairs, told local media that armed men invaded the predominantly Muslim community of Unguwan Manta in the Malumfashi local government area and opened fire indiscriminately on worshippers at the mosque during morning prayers. Muazu said it was believed that the attackers were carrying out a “retaliatory action” and noted that two days earlier, local residents had ambushed bandits who had been harassing the Unguwan Manta community and killed “many of them.”
