Eleven people killed in a bomb explosion at a rally in Pakistan
September 3. At least 11 people were killed by a detonated bomb at a public rally in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta late on Tuesday night.
Government spokesman Hamza Shafaat said the rally was held to mark the anniversary of the death of Sardar Ataullah Mengal, a nationalist leader and former chief minister of the province.
His son, Sardar Akhtar Mengal, who was present at the event, was unharmed, Shafaat said, adding that 30 other people were injured.
“According to our information, the bomb exploded in a parking lot as people were leaving the rally,” he said.
Police spokesman Atar Rashid said police were investigating the explosion, which appeared to have been carried out by a suicide bomber. No one has claimed responsibility.
Quetta is the capital of the troubled province of Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran. Both Islamist militants and Baloch separatists are active in the region.
